Principal's Message

by Mr. Doug Workman

Updated May, 2008

Dear Parents-

Once again, time flies! The year is
rapidly coming to a close, yet school never really ends at Ascension! As we wind up this year, we are already planning for next year. We can promise you a very exciting one, as our faculty is developing marvelous Smart Board applications to further enhance student learning. This Summer, our entire Math curriculum will be enhanced, after application of the latest research by the National Council of Teachers on the spectrum of mathematic functions, including numbers and operations, measurements, geometry and Algebra. While Smart Board and computer assisted instruction techniques will be applied, we also intend to increase drill and practice. We are nearing decision points in our PreK-3—8 Science program review and can’t wait to apply the new materials! As you have walked the halls, we are sure that you noticed the outstanding progress our students are making in writing! With our students already performing in the top 10% in the NATION on the ITBS, we can’t wait to see next year’s results! We are aiming for the stars!

As we write, our classes continue to fill with new students, who, to hear them tell it, are a bit frustrated by the FCAT frenzy and being taught to a test, instead of better using available instruction time. We anticipate the same number of classes at each grade as we have this year, with the exception of PreK-4 which may well require additional classrooms, due to our VPK Provider licensure.
Yes ! We will host VPK next year! Please
be sure to return the paperwork quickly,
once we send it to you, because we anticipate a flood of applicants. If you haven’t
registered for next year, please do so as
the seats may be filled before you remember to do so.

We are sending out a family survey in this Friday packet, similar to one sent out in January of 2007. While we asked some general questions, we are very interested in specific areas for improvement, so we can quickly address them over the summer. Please let us hear your ideas. Every suggestion is important.

We are very pleased and proud to announce that, once again, Ascension has earned the designation as an Accelerated Reader Master School. In addition, our library has earned the honor for excellence as a Master Library! We continue to soar!

As I close, I thank you for the opportunity to work with, and love, your children. Now that I have experienced most events and know our students, I am ready to lead the way toward even higher levels of academic excellence! Soarin’ - our program for gifted students, will begin next year with vigor and enthusiasm! What’s next?

Sincerely,

Doug Workman
