Ascension Tutors

Updated October, 2005 by Anita Brady

This was the fourteenth year of an expanded Volunteer Tutor program at Ascension school in which students are tutored Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am by volunteers from the parish community.

The classroom teacher assigns the work to be covered. This may consist of helping the student catch up with class work missed while ill or otherwise absent, make-up tests, class work which appears to need improvement, explanation or completion, with a heavier emphasis this year n reading skills, particularly in the first and second grade.

The volunteers from the parish community do not always have children or grandchildren in the school. The present group of volunteers has returned to tutor the children anywhere from six to ten years. They are aware of the student’s progress each week and their contribution to it.

The tutor program was coordinated by Ruth M. Mathison (Miss Ruth) who turned the program over to Ms. Joan Bobka. Ruth has a Master’s Degree in History and Education and is a retired college professor. Joan Bobka is in charge of Learning Support at Ascension.
