Welcome to Ascension's Second Grade!

Supply List
Reading Assignment
Math Worksheet

Dear Parents,

Below you will find the required summer reading and mathematics activities for your son or daughter entering the second grade next school year. These activities have been designed to serve as a bridge from one grade level to the next. Please have your child complete all activities over the summer.
Summer Reading
Literacy is a skill that is enhanced only through practice. Research shows that a consistent amount of time for reading each day (30-60 minutes) definitely increases reading and comprehension skills. This growth will benefit your child in every subject, even math!

Please help your child make appropriate selections that will serve to enhance their enjoyment of reading. You and your child can do this by looking through the list of books on the Ascension AR book list on the school website together, in order to identify specific interests, or readability levels, and to eliminate books that may have been previously read.

Discuss with your child what they have read in order to help him/her focus on main ideas, formulate opinions, and provoke questions. By supporting reading throughout summer, you can help to motivate your child to become a stronger reader. Please have your child bring the completed reading projects and verification form to their teacher during the first week of school.

Summer Mathematics
Research tells us that frequent, brief practice is the best way to retain learned skills. Brief, daily review of math facts, and addition and subtraction skills will keep your child ready for second grade! Consider a cassette or CD of math facts to play in the car. Chant math facts with your child. Flash cards are a good “tried and true” skill builder. Ten to fifteen minutes a day using any of the math computer games will be fun and helpful. Please have your child complete the summer math worksheets and return them to their teacher during the first week of school.
Have a wonderful summer,
Ms. Potomski and Ms. Finnegan

Summer Reading Activities

Your child is required to read Mister Seahorse by Eric Cane, and two more books of their choice. Then complete these three activities for the books read:

1. Write a letter to the author of one of the books. You can mail this letter to the author care of the publisher. The address for the publisher is found in the front of the book. Please provide a copy of this letter for your teacher. Also, include a letter of response from the author if one is received.

2. For another book, create a poster showing the best part. Reading a good book is exciting! Share this excitement by showing your friends and your teacher what is so great about the book you chose to read. This project must be completed on the standard 8 1/2” x 11” piece of paper.

3. Return the verification form stating that you have completed reading all three books from the list. This form must be signed by you and by one or both of your parents. The verification form satisfies the project requirement for the third book your child has read.

Remember that reading is fun! Enjoy working on these projects and
be proud of the work you produce.

Please bring your completed projects to your teacher during the first week of school.
